AJFF Celebrates 25 Years with Special Gala Concert

The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is set to commemorate its 25th anniversary with an exclusive gala concert on Monday, October 20, at Symphony Hall. The event will feature the acclaimed conductor Stuart Chafetz leading the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO). While the complete list of performances will be revealed closer to the date, attendees can anticipate a selection of approximately 20 film scores that highlight the significant impact of Jewish narratives in cinema over the years. The program will encompass a range of works from Biblical epics to cherished musicals, complemented by carefully curated visual elements to enhance the overall multimedia experience. Notably, this year’s concert will introduce live vocal performances from both soloists and a choir, a departure from AJFF’s previous gala concert in 2010.

Conductor Stuart Chafetz Brings Expertise to the Stage

AJFF’s organizers expect a full house, as Symphony Hall accommodates 1,800 seats and ticket sales have generated considerable excitement. Maestro Stuart Chafetz, renowned for his engaging personality and extensive experience as a principal pops conductor, will lead the evening’s performances. His expertise lies in film scores and accessible programming, having conducted major orchestras throughout North America and collaborated with prominent artists from diverse musical backgrounds. Partnering with AJFF’s Executive & Artistic Director, Kenny Blank, Chafetz will guide the celebration of Jewish cinema’s rich legacy, alongside Ben Mankiewicz, the esteemed host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

ASO’s Elite Musicians to Bring the Vision to Life

The ASO will comprise a carefully selected ensemble of top musicians to realize Chafetz’s artistic vision. A distinguished conductor and percussionist, Chafetz is celebrated for his captivating stage presence and his ability to merge classical music with popular culture. He currently serves as the principal pops conductor for several symphonies including those in Columbus, Chautauqua, and Marin, and frequently guest conducts with major orchestras such as those in Detroit and Seattle. His collaborations include a range of artists from Ne-Yo to Leslie Odom Jr., and he has developed signature programs like “Symphonic Genesis” and “Totally 80s.” Notably, he was previously the principal timpanist for the Honolulu Symphony.

Kenny Blank’s Vision for AJFF’s Future

AJFF’s Executive & Artistic Director, Kenny Blank, is spearheading an ambitious growth initiative aimed at transforming AJFF into a year-round cultural hub focused on Jewish arts. Special guest Ben Mankiewicz, a well-known figure in film commentary and the host of TCM, will also participate in the event. Mankiewicz, recognized for his engaging style and deep understanding of cinematic history, has connected audiences with classic films nationwide. As a third-generation filmmaker and grandson of “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, he proudly carries on his family’s legacy and advocates for diverse storytelling in cinema. Mankiewicz has been a steadfast supporter of AJFF, having hosted the festival’s 10th Anniversary Gala and contributed to its programs over the years, viewing AJFF as a leading global Jewish film festival and Atlanta as a pivotal location for significant storytelling.

The Gala Concert as a Catalyst for Future Growth

While the Gala Concert honors AJFF’s 25-year legacy, it also sets the stage for future developments. As part of the Kenny Blank Vision Initiative, AJFF is currently in the midst of a $2.5 million growth campaign to evolve into a year-round Jewish cultural institution. This initiative will include establishing a fund to support emerging and diverse Jewish filmmakers, launching new educational programs for youth and schools, expanding community programming and partnerships, and improving accessibility and technological innovation. Blank emphasized that these initiatives aim to ensure AJFF’s influence reaches all members of the Atlanta community, promoting storytelling that inspires, provokes thought, and fosters connections.
